Los Feliz—A new exhibit at the Griffith Observatory is something to marvel. The Celestial Globe measures four feet in diameter and weighs 800 pounds. As it rotates, viewers see bronze figurines of 46 constellations such as Leo the Lion, Orion the Hunter, Aquarius and more.
When Dr. E.C. Krupp, the director of the Observatory, welcomed crowds at a recent reception, he later noted that there are a few mysteries among the ancient constellations.
The Celestial Globe occupies a bright stairwell between the ground floor and the historic main level. The exhibit space was originally conceived as part of the Observatory’s massive renovation in 2000, but due to budgetary reasons, “all we could do was make the stairs and then it took a little while to realize what should go there,” he said.
